Jack the Treacle Eater, Barwick, near Yeovil, Somerset. Four follies were built by George Messiter about 1820 at Barwick Park, just south of Yeovil, in order to mark the park boundaries. The most spectacular of these is “Jack the Treacle Eater”. The tradition is that Jack, a noted local runner, who is commemorated by the figure on the top trained on treacle. This folly can be reached on foot down a narrow track leading off a minor road from the A37, which passes the gates of the special school which now occupies Barwick House.
