One
of the most important decisions ever made at Redwood Stone was
to invest their own in-house mould shop. It was the early eighties
and Redwood's were looking to expand both their Kingfisher and
Redwood Stone ranges. The easy route to growth taken by a lot
of stone companies is to simply copy existing designs, the more
difficult is to create your own, original designs from scratch.
The
family enlisted the help of semi-retired expert ornamental plasterer
Authur Claridge on a part time basis. Arthur had worked for many
years, starting well before the war, for internationally famous
plasterers Martin's of Cheltenham. The techniques of running,
turning and casting plaster were ideally suited to creating original
masters for Redwood and Kingfisher products. Steve Slight joined
Arthur in the mould shop, first making the moulds from Arthur's
original designs and then learning the plastering skills necessary
to be able to create the originals.
From
those early days right through to the present Redwood Stone design
and produce all their own originals and moulds. The mould shop
now employs four full time craftsmen, latterly designing and creating
the Reclamation Stone and Gothic Folly collections. Moulding techniques have advanced through
the years but with this new product range the creation of the
originals has reverted to even more traditional methods than plastering
- every new piece is hand carved from stone.
Of
course the major advantage of this in-house mould shop is that
every new Redwood Stone ornament is protected by law (Copyright
and Design Registration) and cannot be copied, thus setting the
company apart from the legions of copiers.
